Crochet meerkat pattern

Please note that this pattern is written using US crochet terminology.

Tools and materials
4mm hook
3 ply wool – 1 light brown, 1 black
Needle for sewing (darning needle)
9mm eyes with safety backs

Abbreviations
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
inc = increase (stitch two sc in one sc)
dec = decrease (stitch next two sc together)
x = repeat (followed by number indicating how many times i.e. ‘x 6′)
sk = skip over next stitch
sl st = slip stitch
(6), (12) (18) etc = number of crochets in round
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
sctog = crochet stitches together to decrease (prefixed with number of stitches to join i.e. 3sctog)

Th body is like a long, tall triangle!

Body
Using light brown wool start with the base of the body…
1) Magic circle, 6 sc into loop (6)
2) inc x 6 (12)
3) 1sc in next, inc x 6 (18)
4) 1sc in next 2sc, inc x 6 (24)
5) 1sc in next 3sc, inc x 6 (30)
6) 1sc in next 4sc, inc x 6 (36)
7) 1sc in next 5sc, inc x 6 (42)
8) 1sc in next 6sc, inc x 6 (48)
9) sc around BLO (48)
10-15) sc around (48)
16) 1 sc in next 6sc, dec x 6 (42)
17-19) sc around (42)
20) 1sc in next 5sc, dec (36)
21-23) sc around (36)
24) 1sc in next 4sc, dec (30)
25-27) sc around (30)
28) 1sc in next 3sc, dec x 6 (24)
29-31) sc around (24)
32) 1sc in next 2sc, dec x 6 (18)
33-36) sc around (18)
Stuff firmly.
37) dec x 6 (9)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing.

Crochet meerkat feet

See how the feet are only sewn to the font half of the base?

Legs – make 2
With light brown start at toe end. Crochet as round, do not turn.
1) ch 7 (7)
2) 5sc, 3sc in next ch1, 4sc, 3sc in next ch1 (15)
3) sc around BLO (15)
4-13) sc around (15)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Set aside and make…

Claws
With black…
1 to 4) ch 5, sl st to ch 1
Finish off leaving tail for sewing. Sew to end of feet between row 1 and 2.
Stuff leg firmly. Flatten ends together and sew to bottom of body with front half the legs sticking out in front of body.

Crochet meerkat arms

The arms are only sewn at the top so they ‘hang’ down

Arms – make 2
With light brown…
1) Magic circle, 5sc into loop (5)
2) inc x 5 (10)
3) sc around BLO (10)
4) sc around (10)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Stuff hands only. Flatten ends and sew top ‘shoulder’ only to the body.

Eye roundies – make 2
With black…
1) Magic circle, 5sc into loop (5)
2) 2hdc into next sc, 1tc, 2hdc into next sc, sl st (5)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Set aside.

Crochet meerkat head

The black tip makes the nose on the end of the snout


With black, start at tip of nose…
1) Magic circle, 4 sc into loop (4)
2) inc x 4 (8)
Change to light brown…
3) sc around BLO (8)
4-5) sc around (8)
6) inc x 4 (16)
7) sc FLO (16)
Nose is complete, continue onto rest of head…
7) inc in next 4sc, 4sc x 2 (24)
8) sc around (24)
9)inc in next 6sc, 6 sc x 2 (30)
10) inc in next 6sc, 3sctog, inc in next 6sc, 3sctog, 6sc (36)
11) sc around (36)
12) 1sc in next, inc around (54)
13) sc around (54)
14) 1sc, dec around (36)
15) 1sc, dec around (24)
Crochet meerkat eyes

The egg shaped eyes should point towards the nose. Along with the brows it helps make him look surprised!


Put eyes in centre of roundies and place between rows 11 and 12 pointing towards the nose. Attach safety backs.
16-17) sc around (24)
18) 1 sc, dec around (18)
19) dec around (9)
Stuff firmly. Finish off leaving long tail. Sew through front loops to close.
Secure eye roundies by sewing to head.

Brows – make 2
Using light brown…
1) ch 7
2-5) 6sc, 1ch, turn
6) 6sc
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Fold brow over double and close ends. Sew to head above eye roundies.

The tail helps keep the meerkat sturdy.

Tail
1) Magic circle, 6sc into loop (6)
2) sc around (6)
3) inc x 6 (12)
4-6) sc around (12)
7) 1sc in next, inc x 6 (18)
8-19) sc around (18)
20) 1sc in next, dec x 6 (9)
21-29) sc around (9)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Sew tail to bottom of back.

Finishing touches
Use the black yarn to sew a smile under the curve of the nose up into the ‘cheeks’.
