Crochet seahorse pattern

Please note that this pattern is written using US crochet terminology.

Tools and materials
4mm hook
3 ply wool in three separate colours (colour 1 = main colour, colour 2 = fins, colour 3 = frills/fin edging)
Yarn needle
9mm eyes with safety backs

Abbreviations
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
inc = increase (stitch two sc in one sc)
dec = decrease (stitch next two sc together)
x = repeat (followed by number indicating how many times i.e. ‘x 6′)
sl st = slip stitch
(6), (12) (18) etc = number of crochets in round
BLO = back loop only
hdc = half double crochet

Body
Using colour 1 and starting at the tip of the tail…

The alternating BLO rounds make this ridge effect

1) Magic circle, 4sc into loop (4)
2-3) sc around (4)
4) “1sc in next, inc” x 2 (6)
5) “1sc in next 2sc, inc” x 2 (8)
6) “1sc in next 3sc, inc” x 2 (10)
7-21) sc around
Stuff tail and continue onto main body. Note that the remaining rounds alternate between BLO and normal stitches.
22) BLO: 4sc, “1sc in next, inc” x 3 (13)
23) 4sc, “1sc in next 2sc, inc” x 3 (16)
24) BLO: 4sc, “1sc in next 3sc, inc” x 3 (19)
25) 4sc, “1sc in next 4sc, inc” x 3 (22)
26) BLO: 4sc in next 5sc, “1sc, inc” x 3 (25)
27) 4sc, “1sc in next 6sc, inc” x 3 (28)
28) BLO: sc around (28)
29) sc around (28)
30) BLO: sc around (28)
31) sc around (28)
32) BLO: sc around (28)

Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Stuff firmly.
Curl seahorse tail round to the round and sew into place with scrap yarn.
Set aside.
Crochet seahorse

Sew the curl in place to the front of the body.


Head
Using colour 1 and starting at the tip of the tail…
1) Magic circle, 6sc into loop (6)
2) BLO: sc around (6)
3-5) sc around (6)
6) inc x 6 (12)
7) “1sc in next, inc” x 6 (18)
8) “1sc in next 2sc, inc” x 6 (24)
9) BLO: “1sc in next 3sc, inc” x 6 (30)
10-14) sc around (30)
15) “1sc in next 3sc, dec” x 6 (24)
16) “1sc in next 2sc, dec” x 6 (18)
17) “1sc in next, dec” x 6 (12)
Attach safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11.
Stuff firmly.
18) dec x 6 (6)
Finish off leaving tail for sewing.
Sew tail through front loops of round 18, close hole and weave in tail.
Sew head to body.

Sew the fin to the seahorse’s bum rather than in the centre of the back.

Main fin
Start with colour 2 and change when indicated…
1) ch 9, turn
2) 7sc, inc (continue as a round so you work into the bottom of original ch 9,) 6sc, inc (17)
3) inc, 6sc, 3sc in next, 8sc (20)
4) “1sc in next, inc” x 10 (30)
5) dec – Change to colour 3. Flatten piece and work next stitches through both sides - “1sc-1dc-1hdc-1dc-1sc into next, sl st” x 6 (43)
Finish off. Sew to lower back of body (over the ‘bum’.)

The head fins should come from the back rather than the side.


Head fins – make 2
Start with colour 2 and change when indicated…
1) ch 5, turn
2-4) 4sc, ch 1, turn
Change to colour 3.
5) “1sc-1dc-1hdc-1dc-1sc into next” x 4
Finish off. Sew to side of head towards back.

The finished product should be about 6.5 inches long.

… and 3 inches at widest point.
