Crochet swan pattern

Please note that this pattern is written using US crochet terminology.

Tools and materials
4mm hook
3 ply wool – 1 black, 1 white, 1 orange
Yarn needle

9mm eyes with safety backs

Abbreviations
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
inc = increase (stitch two sc in one sc)
dec = decrease (stitch next two sc together)
x = repeat (followed by number indicating how many times i.e. ‘x 6′)
sk = skip over next stitch
sl st = slip stitch
(6), (12) (18) etc = number of crochets in round
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
hdc = half double crochet
sctog = decrease by number indicated (i.e. ’3sctog’)

Body

Use a foundation chain to make an oval base rather than a circular one!.


Using white yarn, start in centre of base with foundation chain…
1) ch7
2) 5sc, 3sc in next (now continue as spiral by crocheting into the bottom of the original ch7) 4sc, 3sc in next (15)

4) 3sc in next, 5sc, inc x 3, 5sc, 3sc in next (22)
5) “1sc in next, inc” x 11 (33)
6) “1sc in next 2sc, inc” x 11 (44)

Close the top of the body neatly – you will be able to see it!

Finish off leaving long tail. Sew tail end through front loops of round 25 and close hole. Secure and weave in tail.

Beak, head and neck
The beak, neck and head are crocheted as one single piece. Start with orange yarn at the tip of the beak and change colour as instructed…
1) ch5
2) 3sc, inc (now continue as spiral by crocheting into the bottom of the original ch7) 3sc (8)
3) inc, 2sc, inc x 2, 2sc, inc (12)
4) inc, 3sc, inc x 2, 3sc, inc (14)
5-13) sc around (14)
Change to white yarn…
14) sc around (14)
Pause here. Using orange yarn, stitch between rows 9 and 10 to seal the front of the beak. Now continue with head.

Now TURN work and continue as rows…

Pause here. Insert eyes in row 19. Stuff head lightly and continue stuffing as you go along.
Now go back to working in rounds…

Now TURN work and continue as rows…

Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Finish stuffing firmly and sew to front-top of body.
Using scrap yarn to tie curves into place. Weave in tails.

Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Flatten tail and sew at opposite end to head in U shape.

Wings – make 2
In white yarn, start at the front of the wing…

The remaining pattern is optional to make a textured wing. You can simply continue ignoring the BLO/FLO instructions for an easier pattern)

Flatten wing and sew front curve (down to row 8 on each side) on either side of the neck.

Finishing touches: Eye pieces – make 2

The black eye piece should go from the beak to the eye.


In black yarn, working in rows…
1) ch8, turn
2) ch7, turn
3) ch6, turn
4) ch5, turn
5) ch4, turn
6) ch3, turn
7) ch2, turn
8) ch1
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing.
Sew with bottom of triangle across row 13 of beak and tip just under eye.
